PERIOD ANTIQUE SHADES FOR CARCEL, GAS, MODERATOR, OIL AND KEROSENE LIGHTING + PARTS

# 5995. An antique French Carcel chandelier. Labeled on the lamp base 'cans': "Lampe Moderateur Perfectionnee HS Paris HS" Size: 32" wide and 40" tall. The heavy cast and gilt bronze shaft and arms are decoration with foliage; the lamps bases are decorated with acorns and oak leaves. This is a very heavy chandelier. Condition: losses to the gilt surface; fitted for electricity. There are no shades that accompany this fixture. The carcel lamps are bolted to the arms (they were not originally bolted to the arms, but just sat inside the lamp cups and the top of each arm. Price $3,750.00.

Item # 4112. An Italian Art Glass lamp. Murano: from the workshop of Archimede Seguso. The pattern is Bullicante. Size: the glass section is 25" tall with the lamp to the top of the shade holder being 38" tall; the base is 12" across. Mounted on a wood base. Condition: no fractures, breaks or losses to the glass; the wood base has two line fractures on the edge. This lamp weighs approximately 26 lbs. We have not taken the lamp apart, we suspect that it comes apart in two or three sections. From a Newport Rhode Island Bellevue Avenue home. The last image shows a photo from the Leslie Pina book about Archimede Seguso: page 71 describing an adventurine and bullicante pattern vase with seed-shaped air bubbles. The size and weight of this lamp prohibits us from packing and shipping this item; however we can deliver this lamp to a reputable local packer shipper where our responsibility from its packing and shipping stops and then it is your responsibiliy to enter into a contract with the shipper\and of course, you may pick up this lamp in person from our gallery . Item #5357. A acid etched glass and brass hall lantern. Aesthetic Movement. The glass ball has deep cut flowers and birds. Size: 35" tall x 10" across. Condition: fitter for electricity. Price: $1,950.00.

Item #5417. An American Aesthetic Movement acid etched panel kerosene hall lantern. Glass and brass. Size: 31" tall x 9" across. Condition: two of the panels have been replaced with lilac etched panels. Fitted for electricity. Price: $2,500.00.

Item #5212. A French Opalene and soft brass hall lantern. Circa 1850-60. Size: 30" tall and 15" across at the widest. Condition: electrified, cracks in the brass crown. Price: $2,250.00.

Item #5988. A pair of Ludwig Moser Kerosene table lamps. Cranberry glass with fired painted decorations. Fitted for electricity (without compromising the kerosene burners). Size: to the top of the chimney: 32" - to the top of the burners: 17.5" - shade size: 7 3/4" tall and 4" diameter fitter. The burners are marked "Hugo Schneider Leipzig" Condition: one of the shades has a chip (size of thumbnail) and crack as shown in one of the pictures. The chimneys are new. The shade decorations match the base decorations; however one of the shades has a different decoration compared to the base, so it must have been replaced at the shop where it was purchased. Price for the pair: $3,850.00.

Item #5951. A bronze and jeweled gas hall pendant. Size: 46" tall x 14" across at the widest. Originally gas and lit with three gas jets from the large six sided lower section. Now fitted for electricity. Condition: dulling of the gilt bronze metal consistent with gas use and age. No jewels are missing. This is the highest quality workmanship for this type of chandelier. Price: $7,000.00.

# 5221. An exceptional American Crystal Gas Chandelier. Size: 40" wide and 52" tall. Six arm. Hundreds of original cut glass prisms reflect the light in a dazzling array creating a light show for the focal point of a room. Circa 1876, this chandelier is consistent with lighting from the Mount Washington Glass Works of New Bedford, Massachusetts. That firm exhibited at the 1876 Philadelphia Exhibition. Condition: one repaired arm; one is fitted for electricity on the outside of the arm; a few prisms missing and a few have chips; the shade rings and the shades are contemporary. Price: $5,950.00.

Item #5719. An American Glass Table Lamp. Circa, early 20th century. Probably made by Fostoria Co. Size: base is 5.5" tall x 19" tall to the top of the glass urn and 32" tall to the top of the shade holder. Condition excellent. This lamp was documented in a photograph taken in the residence of The White House during the Johnson administration. Pictured on page 116 in "The Living White House" by Lonnelle Aikman for The White House Historical Association. LCC No. 66-30559. Published 1966. Price: $950.00.

Item #5858 (4). An American or English brass and bronze Sinumbra Lamp. Circa 1850. Size: base is 8" square. 26" to the shade ring and 36" to the top of the shade. The shade is 10" in diameter. Manufacturer unknown. Original burner. Not fitted for electricity. No chimney holder. An identical lamp was offered at auction over a decade ago and sold for $21,250.00 and was pictured in the Dec. 2011 Maine Antique Digest. Price: $18,500.00

Item #5858 (10). An American brass and bronze Solar Lamp. Circa 1850. Size: base is 7". 20.25" to the shade ring and 30.5" to the top of the shade. Manufacturer unknown. Original burner works, chimney fitter and proper lipped chimney. Heavily cast floral and foliated base and a fully developed Corinthian capitol under the font. The gilt is in excellent condition. Price: $5,000.00.

Item #5858 (14). A fire gilt bronze Sinumbra Lamp. Circa 1825-50. Size: base is 5.5" across; the lamp is 23" tall to the bottom of the font and the lamp is 32" tall to the top of the shade. The shade is 10" in diameter. Not fitted for electricity, however the chimney holder may be new. SOLD

Item #5858 (8). A figural (Roman Soldier) Sinumbra Lamp. From the firm of Cornelius of Philadelphia. A similar lamp is pictured on page 159 of Gerald Gowitt's book "19th Century Elegant Lighting - Argand, Sinumbra, and Solar lamps" Size: base is 5.5" across; the lamp is 22" tall to the bottom of the font and the lamp is 29" tall to the top of the shade. The shade is 8.75" in diameter. Not fitted for electricity. Price: $12,500.00.

Item #5858 (5). A figural Sinumbra Lamp. From the firm of Stotenburg & Cox N.Y. Size: base is 5.5" across; the lamp is 28" tall to the bottom of the font and the lamp is 36" tall to the top of the shade. Not fitted for electricity. Price: $15,000.00.

Item #5858 (1). An identical pair of Sinumbra Lamps. Mid-19th century. Attributed to Messenger & Sons London. An identical pair is pictured in Gowitt's Book "19th Century Elegant Lighting" page 130. Described: "The foliated embossed 10" diameter shade rings support cut and etched blown glass globes decorated with double dove designs. The fonts are flat, having no curved mold to their configuration. The foliated and reeded drip cups surmount the heavens, which - according to Greek mythology - Atlas is condemned to bear the weight of upon his shoulders. Masks, possibly the Four Winds, floral embellishments and wreathes adorn the octagonal base and plinth." Height to the shade ring: 24" and the overall height is 33.5". Condition is excellent and not electrified. Price: $25,000.00 the pair.

Item #5858 (9). An American Sinumbra Lamp. Circa 1825-1850. Probably Hooper of Boston. A similar figure is pictured in Gowitt's Book "19th Century Elegant Lighting" as a solar table lamp. This lamp has a high gold gilt finish. The base is 5.5" square and is 22" tall to the bottom of the font and is 30" tall to the top of the shade. The shade is 7.75" in diameter. The lamp is not fitted for electricity but retains its original oil elements. Price: $9,500.00.

Item # 5791. A Caldwell Style floor candelabra. Circa 1905. Gilt Bronze and pink marble. Size: 76.5" tall to the top fo the bulbs. the base in 10.5" across. 6 lights. Condition: chips and old repair to the marble base. Re-wired. No factory marks. From a Newport Rhode Island home of note. This quality torchiere/candelabra could have easily been used in The White House or and embassy or Newport "cottage." Price: $5,500.00.

#5744. A Sampson Lamp Famille Rose Style. A porcelain lamp painted in the Famille Rose Style: circa 1905. Size: 7" base, 15.5" to the top of the lid and 25" tall to the top of the lamp shade holder. Porcelain attributed to the firm of Edme Sampson (French) and the fire gilt bronze fittings are probably French. The lamps is composed of 5 sections: the gilt bronze base, the body of the lamp, the gilt bronze intermediary cap, the porcelain lid and the top gilt bronze cap. Condition: fitted with three chain pull electrical (Edison size) sockets that are less than 10 years old. This lamp was always meant to be fitted for electricity. The high fired paint decorations are beautifully executed as expected from the Sampson factory. Copying an oriental ginger jar. The gilt bronze fittings are of the finest quality. From a New York City Town House. Price: $2,750.00.

Item # 3382. A Bronze Chandelier. Bronze with gilt finish. Size: 34" tall and the metalwork is 19" across / shades could make this fixture wider. Condition: the shades are reproduction and there is a small decorative element missing (one of the missing elements is shown) there may be a couple of leaves missing also: there is so much going on here it is hard to tell; wear to the bottom hook decoration in the center. The style is European Beaux Arts: c. 1900. This is an electric chandelier: newly wired. This is a period chandelier. It is very heavy. This style came in three arm up to 12 arms: this is a five arm chandelier. A single cherub sits most of the way up blowing a horn. Price: $5,750.00.

# 4248. Shown is a companion chandelier to item number 3762. As described: . . . In 1910 Russian Artist and set designer (for Diaghilev's Ballet Russe), Leon Bakst, influenced international society and the applied arts with his barbaric exoticism for the ballet Scheherazade. Oriental filigree lamps became all the rage which were also well suited to the new luxury of electricity. This fanciful iron filigree example is of American manufacturer and dates from that period. Size: 29" wide and 47" tall to the top of the pipe. In a recent article in NEST { Winter 2003} titled "The Most Indian House in America" by David Petrovsky, Lockwood de Forest { 1850 - 1932 } and his influence on taste is discussed. The exotic lines of this fixture certainly reflect thematically de Forest's design concepts. This chandelier would have been at home in a de Forest designed interior. Condition: this chandelier has been totally restored; the surface cleaned, and primed and painted, fitted for electricity and new opalescent gas and electric shades have been added. Minor losses. From a private collector in Newport Rhode Island and we believe that (originally because both were from the same are in Newport ) both probably were used in the same home in Newport. Price: $950.00

# 4848. A gas figural newel post lamp of an Etruscan Warrior. Material: White Metal. Circa 1869-89.Size: 43" tall to the top of the shade ring; the base is 10" across. The figure and the gas staff is detachable from the base. This figure is titled in large letters on the base: "ETRUSCAN" The head of this figure is similar to the form used by American Express in their early advertisements. This is the second figural lamp of this form in the last dozen years. It is from a Newport estate. Condition: the finish is new: putty colored paint and bright gold paint. There has been a restoration to the crest on the head of the warrior: the crest was detached and restored with epoxy. There is a standard 5" gas ring on this lamp which has been fitted for electricity. There is no shade for this lamp. Price: $1,950.00.

Item # 5119. A pair of Argand lamps. At first look, these do not look like Argand Lamps, but on closer examination, they were at one time. They have succumbed to the hacksaw of the 1930's 'lamp shop' when they were fitted for electricity. First: the manufacturer was Henry Hooper of Boston. Heavy cast bronze. The central form behind the prisms supported a pair of arms which have been cut and disposed of. The central top trumpet pierced section held a glass vase. To fill the lamp: you probably removed the glass vase and trumpet holder and added oil; the convenience of not having to remove the heavy prism ring was a novelty at the time. Size: 18" tall to the top of the pierced trumpet; 10" across the prism ring and 12" tall to the top of the prism ring. So . . . this is a project: arms and burners must be found and soldered to the main body; glass trumpets must be found that fit correctly and of course 4 (two for each lamp) appropriate shades must be acquired. The prisms: about 3/4's of them appear to be period; the rest are about the same length, but a different style and probably later additions. The patina is very worn. The restoration will take a lot of effort; however, very few of this form of Argand has survived. We know of no complete example. Price as they sit; for the pair: $2,600.00.

# 5154. A French Sinumbra Table Lamp. This lamp dates from before 1850. Signed on the oil font: - Par Brevet - D'Importation - Concession - M. et C ie - . Size: approximately 20" tall to the top of the font; the shade is 10" in diameter and it is 8" tall making the lamp almost 30" tall to the top of the chimney. Condition: electrified; one of the oil feeder tubes which also support the font has been replaced; there are small dents to the octagonal base; the surface of the lamp - the green paint and gold decoration - was probably 'decorated' in the 1950's. The glass shade is a period shade but may or may not be the original base shade; there are two flakes to the shade. The metal is tin with brass fittings. This style shade which is frosted inside gives a very soft pleasing light. Price: $950.00

# 5078. A pair of Newport Estate Gilded Age Wall Sconces. Circa 1900. Size: each stands out from the wall 7.5" is 14.5" tall. Gilded brass metalwork and a fine and rare Lalique style bulb cover which screws over the bulb housing. There is no signature on the frosted bulb covers. Condition: worn gilt on the metal work; tiny white paint spatters over the sconce and one of the bulb covers has a tiny flake to the lower edge. These sconces probably need to be rewired. There is what appear to be a gas key which operates the on and off switch. Price for the pair is $1,350.00.

# 3762. . . . Losses and dents consistent with age and use. There are four decorative chains attached from the top to the main body of the fixture each with a spiral spring decorative element: one of these spiral elements is missing along with part of the chain. I believe that it would not be difficult to reproduce this missing section. This fixture was stored in a horse stable on Bellevue Avenue here in Newport, Rhode Island for more than 50 years. It probably was used in a foyer in some home in the area. It uses a single light bulb and we have a section of pale paper covering the interior of the basket to show off the filigree when the bulb is lit. It is possible that there may have been an art glass shade covering the light bulb. The basket is hinged and opens to change to the bulb. Newly rewired. Price: $650.00.

# 3122. A fine American three arm gas chandelier. Fitted for electricity. Three children 'support' the center shaft from which a pan with three heads adds to the Renaissance theme; arms of leaves and tendrils support red flashed 'Chariot' theme gas shades. A small but presentable fixture. Original fire gilt finish. The figures have been repainted. The fixture is 28" across and 32" tall. SOLD
