# 3767. A ceramic / pottery / Pedestal. Made between 1890 and 1910. Thickly glazed dull white surface over a solid composition material. Size: app. 42" tall and the top will support an object 9.5" across. Condition: various flakes and glaze crackelature. This is a very heavy stone like pedestal. Probably made for an indoor conservatory or to be used outside. We had this in our garden for a couple of years with the Newport, Rhode Island cold not affecting the integrity of the pedestal. We have seen a turn of the century catalogue from the firm of Liberty of London that pictured similar garden pedestals and this (unmarked) pedestal may be from the firm of Liberty and Company. Difficult (but possible) to ship. Price: $4,500.00.

# 5141. A French Art Pottery Vase. Etched signature for Gaziello Vallauris. Size: 11.75" or 30cm tall. The metallic glaze varies from top to bottom: copperish on the top to a green on the base. The glaze is a little different on each side. The surface is bumpy with the entire vase having a hand hammered finish. Condition: a rim glaze line from the top down for about 1.5" plus another glaze line on the opposite side of the top, impossible to photograph. Both glaze lines are about the same size; and two under base edge flakes. A very attractive vase. The form is pinched at the top to create a quatrafoil lip with the appearance of fluting almost to the base. Price on Request.

# 5135. A fine Weller Sicard miniature vase. Early 20th century. Size: 5.75" tall. Condition: excellent with no cracks or repairs. Signed in two places: "Sicard" and "Weller Sicard". SOLD

# 4864. A Heliosine Ware pottery Art Nouveau Vase. Circa 1910. 21.5" tall and a 5.5" square base. Marked under the glaze: Heliosine Ware Austria with a crown. Incised Numbers "21039" and "3". We believe that the crown mark is for the firm of Ernst Wahliss. They were a retailer and maunfacturer, opening a shop in Vienna in 1836 with branches in London (1888) Berlin (1896); they were agents for Reissner, Stellmacher & Kessel and Zsolnay. The firm was renamed Alexander Porcelain Works Ernst Wahliss in 1905. This information is from Marks and Monograms of the Modern Movement by Malcolm Haslam which is an excellent reference book (ISBN 0 7188 2291 9) Condition: two very long cracks on oposite sides of the very tall vase from the top down about 8". Rubbing to the dull metallic glaze. A very large example of this most uncommon line of Art Nouveau Ceramics. Price: $950.00.

# 4754. A pottery garden seat. c. 1870's. Size: 22" tall x 12" across at the top x 14" across at the base. Condition: a section of banded border is missing around the base; minor staining and edge flakes consistent with use and age. Country of origin: probably Germany. Consistent with works from the Mettlach Factory. The factory was established in an abbey in Mettlach Germany around 1836 and continued until 1921. Heavy stoneware with three part construction. The pillow at the top is slightly unlevel to allow water to run off the surface. Four rams heads and four dogs heads add to the decorative elements. As a side note: in the Franco Zeffirelli Film La Traviata, three of these garden seats were used in room decorations. The opening scene in Violetta's home as it is being carted off. A pair of these garden seats is seen in Violetta's country home in her garden room going up the stairs. Each garden seat in these scene has a potted plant on it. This sumptuously decorated film used exquisite furnishings. From a local Newport Rhode Island home. This item may be safely shipped via Fedex or United Postal Sevice. The price for this garden seat is: $2,750.00.

Item # 172. A Hungarian Figure of a male. c. 1910-15. Cubist in form. Mark for the Obuda Factory of Budapest Hungary. Incised initials of the artist: "M.Gy." This size of this figure is 9.75" tall. The Glaze: Obuda glazes had some relationship to glazes from the Zsolnay Factory, but they were more reserved. This brown dull metallic glaze has an undertone of green, blue and purple gradiations. Condition: two chips, one on the leg and the other on the base; flea bites to the top of the plateau that the figure is standing on. Most Cubist decorative arts from Central Europe seem to come from Czechslokavia, this exceptional item reflects an international style that was also experiemented with in Hungary. For every 1000 pieces of Zsolnay that comes to the market, you find only one from the Obuda Factory. Price: $3,000.00.

Item # 4880. A Fischer J. Budapest Pitcher. C. 1880's. 14" tall. Cream background with colorful flowers and leaves; gold trace decorations. This pitcher at the top neck is surrounded with 8 bowed decorations with the body flaring to a tri-corner footed base. The clock itself strikes on the hour and half hour and is in operating condition. Made by Edouard Gilles, ceramist, who produced about the same time as early Galle. Circa 1868-1895. The price for the three piece set is: $3,950.00.

# 4051. A Choisy vase: made in France. 11" tall. Marks: incised: '1288 M3' and printed in a circle the initials: 'LCB' and '2018 B'. Gallery label from a Newport Rhode Island firm of E.P. Allan which was established in 1831: Erastus P. Allan had a shop that sold glass and china and earthenware at 63 65 Thames Street; he lived above his shop. Rim edge wear thru the glaze of about 3". Both the front and back of this vase is decoration. If this were a marked Rookwood vase the price would be several thousand dollars. The back is decorated with flowers. This vase was sold from Mr. Allan's shop and has since not left Newport. Dates from the late 19th century. Price: $1,250.00.

# 4342. A 4 piece set including three plates (7" diameter) and a cup and saucer.Copper Lustre rims outline hand painted figures from the Bayeux Tapestry. This art pottery service was meant to be used for display. The only person I know of who worked with copper lustre AND Bayeux Tapestry designs was Louis Dismant who worked at tSubles in Normandy. His mark was incised. The backs of these items is incised marked, but with the initials "RB" in hand written script and the word "BAYEUX". Each piece is marked. I would date the service early 20th century. Condition: edge flakes to the lustre but not to the pottery. Price: $450.00 the set.

# 4555. A rare and unusual planter. Probably made in Austria or Bohemia. Terra Cotta. Polychromed. Size: 28" overall height. The pot holder is 9.5" deep and has a minimum width of 6.5". The bottom has a footprint of 9" x 12". The Hobbit - Troll - Elf - Gnome is protruding from the tree 8.5". As described: A lower section of a birch tree is split open allowing the male character to lean out from inside the trunk; mushrooms grow out of the floor of the trunk; the top section is hollow to allow for a (real) plant. We would date this item between 1875 and 1914. This item is made in two sections: the figure was cast separately and attached from the inside with wire and wooden 'keys'. Condition: flaking to the painted surface; repairs to the lower section (about 8 square inches on the lower left section was broken into 5 sections and repaired: not noticeable from the outside). This item is not shippable and must be picked up from our gallery. Price: $1,500.00.

# 4689. A Decorative Art Nouveau or Secession Ceramic Pottery Vase. Marked Germany and numbered 955. Darkish Brown Ground with colored raised piping to create flowers with a white lined background. The decor has a Nabis feel about it. Reminds me of designs from the Munich School of Art. Jozsef Rippl-Ronai (1861-1927) designed items for The Zsolnay Factory in Pecs Hungary with similiar decorations. Size: 10 1/8' tall; footprint: 4.5". Condition: tiny firing line at the foot of the vase. This pottery was made between 1919 and 1929 by the Kunsttöpferei und Majolikafabrik Carl Gebauer (Art-Pottery and Majolica Factory) in Bürgel, Thüringen, a small town near Leipzig. Located near the world-famous cities of Meissen and Dresden, the area is rich with the tradition of pottery-making. Gebauer began his career as a partner in the Neumann & Gebauer factory in Bürgel, founded in 1884, and then set up his own factory in 1892. His works were shown, and received commendations from several exhibitions throughout Germany. In 1920 he was employing 18 workers, exhibiting at the Leipzig fair, and his factory produced a variety of ceramic goods. By 1927 his workforce numbered 30 one of the largest ceramic factories in Bürgel. Once the Berlin Wall was established, Bürgel fell into the territory of the communist GDR. In 1948, the factory was taken into state ownership. Carl Gebauer's brother, Paul, was also a well-known ceramicist. But the Gebauer name is probably best known for Walter Gebauer, son of Paul, a world-renowned potter in the GDR, and highly respected throughout both Germanies for his glazes and technique. Walter, who worked with his uncle Carl from 1922-25, died in 1989. A ceramics museum in Bürgel, Keramik-Museum Bürgel, has a few similiar pieces. Price: $400.00.

# DFH. A rare ceramic pitcher att. to D.F. Haynes of Baltimore, 1883-1885. Glazed Earthenware. App. 5 7/8" tall. Condition: considerable surface ware and edge flaking to the spout. Unmarked. David Francis Haynes purchased Chesapeake Pottery located in Baltimore in 1882. that year he hired and English potter Frederick Hackney to become director of the art pottery production of the factory. In '83, Hackney introduced "Calvert Ware" which is the item depicted above. Form consisted of vases, pitchers and mugs. The style above is fairly representative of many of his designs. Designs reflect an English Middle Age motif. We have had several examples of Calvert Ware, all different forms and colors. This item has been sold {we are always interest in purchasing pitchers and vases with similar decorations.
